Consignment sales, another way to sell.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing easier than the traditional sales process. We need a seller or retailer to buy products from a supplier. Stored afterwards before it goes on sale to calculate their future rate of return.&nbsp;If they opt for a consignment sale, it is not so simple.&nbsp;This kind of contract includes the consignor, i.e., the owner of the goods until they are sold, and a consignee.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A consignment contract must contain certain clauses:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Terms of payment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delivery charges.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The duration of the agreement between the parties.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insurance including coverage for shoplifting and receipt of damaged goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sbshoppingbasket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/777-uai-720x290.png\" alt=\"Consignment sales\" class=\"wp-image-107831\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. What is Consignment Inventory?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Consignment inventory is a business arrangement where the consignor (a vendor or wholesaler) agrees to give their goods to a consignee (usually a retailer) without the consignee paying for the goods upfront \u2013 the consignor still owns the goods, and the consignee pays for the goods only when they sell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;For example, a woman\u2019s watch vendor might want to break into a new market, but they are relatively unknown and have had a hard time selling their goods to retailers.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the vendor offers their watches on consignment, the retailer agrees to stock the watches in their store and only pay for the ones they sell.&nbsp;&nbsp;This arrangement can be hugely beneficial for both parties, but it also carries with it some major risks.&nbsp;&nbsp;To get a balanced view of consignment inventory, let us&nbsp;&nbsp; look at some of its pros and cons for both vendors and retailers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Understand consignent sales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the consignor sends goods to the consignee, a\u202fjournal entry\u202fis not needed. However, when the consignee sells the goods received, they pay the consignor a predetermined sale amount. The consignor would then record a debit to cash and a credit to sales. They would also purge the related amount of\u202finventory\u202fas a debit to\u202fthe&nbsp;cost of goods sold\u202fand a credit to inventory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the consignee is unable to sell all goods, they are able to return the goods to the consignor (before a specified date). Therefore, the consignor bears the risks and rewards of ownership, while the consignee is not required to pay for the goods until they are sold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The advantages and disadvantages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages and disadvantages for sellers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New market:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoentrepreneurs.org\/en\/selling-products-on-consignment\/#:~:text=Selling%20goods%20on%20consignment%20is,not%20sell%20and%20without%20obligation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Consignment sales<\/a>&nbsp;allow sellers to enter new markets at minimal cost to retailers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low stock holding costs: Reduction of stock holding costs by giving part to the retailer&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct shipment: instead of stock \u2192 entrepot \u2192 retailer, we do direct stock \u2192 retailer&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased cost of unsold stock: \u00a3 stock to seller = can have a decrease as stock is held.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncertain cash flow. The seller only paid when the retailer has sold everything.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unsold stock = returns to the seller.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages and disadvantages for retailers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced cost of ownership: Retailers can draw on consignment stock for use without owning it, reducing their total cost of ownership, and holding costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimal risk:&nbsp;&nbsp; No need to pay for inventory upfront, no need to pay for inventory in advance \u2192 capital invested in buying and selling products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Improved cash flow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The retailer does NOT pay to hold the goods and only pays their supplier when they sell the products.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customer loyalty increases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased risk of stock deterioration+ retailer holds stock for long, + chances = damaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased risk of stock count errors. Consignment stock should be \u201cinvisible\u201d to most employees. Mutual benefit How?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maintain a mutually beneficial relationship&nbsp;IF develop honest partnerships to work together to improve their processes and strengthen their supply chain management.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sellers should help retailers as much as possible, and retailers should strive to sell their consignment stock as efficiently as possible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Create a mutually beneficial contract :&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Responsibilities and expectations of each party.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The length of time the retailer will hold the stock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The prices of the goods sold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is responsible in case of damage to the retailer\u2019s property, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;+ detailed and comprehensive contract, + business partnership will be transparent, =&gt;helps to mitigate future disagreements.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of inventory management software designed for consignment stocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inventory management systems do not work with consignment stocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excel or paper-based inventory management system =&gt; slow and difficult seller\/retailer collaboration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most inventory management software only deals with on-site inventory and does not consider consignment agreements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And many companies do not work with consignment very often, which confuses the process and discourages companies from trying it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An optimal solution to these problems would be to invest in inventory management software designed to manage consignment stocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ideally, the software should track the inventory sent to the consignee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Track inventory that needs to be replenished at the consignee\u2019s site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Track inventory that needs to be ordered to replenish the consignor\u2019s inventory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And make consignment stock management as simple as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. The Challenges of Selling on Consignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 Challenges selling items or products on consignment.
