Yesterday, July 3rd it was the International Bag Free Day. And if such day exists it is because plastic bags are nature’s black beast.

Extremely light, plastic bags usually slip away from our hands at a minimal gust of wind, thus ending up somewhere in our planet, where it will take between 400 and 1000 years to degrade. It will be then when animals may mistake plastic bags for food, leading them to choke to death or to die slowly from infection.

Toxics from plastic

Furthermore, small toxic bits will detach as plastic bags break up, which may enter the food chain if animals ingest them accidentally. Consequently, toxicity may be ingested by humans too and cause serious health problems, such as cancers, birth defects, immune system problems, and childhood developmental issues.

The great amount of rejected plastic bags are ending up in the massive whirlpool-like currents in the North Pacific Ocean. It occupies already 1.400.000m2. Besides, using ten lightweight plastic bags per week over a 2-year period, the greenhouse gas impact has more than three times the greenhouse gas impact of a reusable ‘green bag’, and consumes about 4.5 times more energy in its manufacture.

Despite such bloodcurdling information, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are still consumed worldwide. 131.000 bags are thrown away after having been used only once. It’s equivalent to dumping nearly 12 million barrels of oil, an extremely expensive and non-renewable source of energy.

Not only have plastic bags a negative impact on our environment, but they are not too practical. Their fragility makes them tear up before placing our shopping in our car’s boot. Besides, they are noisy, our hands hurt when full, and they are not too trendy.

Therefore, Shopping Basket has designed a range of baskets with an equivalent usage to plastic bags. We are talking about our baskets Market (30L), Kanguro (27L), Fama (15L) and Sweet (10L), which will allow carrying your shopping, to go picnic, to take it to the beach or to go to the supermarket. Moreover, their handles have been designed to provide a better grip and to avoid causing pain to our hands. They are manufactured with ecologic machinery and made from quality plastic. And they are recyclable. A practical, durable, elegant and ecologic alternative to plastic bags.
